U.S. Coast Guard Birthday, 1790

Across the street from Lorain County Community College.
The first Congress authorized Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, to construct ten vessels, known as “revenue cutters,” to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue which provided as much as 90 percent of federal revenue. That fact is why the Coast Guard was originally called Revenue Marine or the Revenue Cutter Service until 1915. In that year, Congress combined it with the U.S. Life Saving Service and rechristened it the Coast Guard.

Calling All Veterans
At Lorain County Veterans Service Commission, our mission is clear: to honor and support the brave women and men who have served in the United States military. Every day, we strive to find new ways to express our gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifices.
Our latest initiative is an FREE trip for veterans to Columbus to visit the National Veterans Memorial Museum followed by a trip to the Central Ohio Fire Museum with lunch at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus.
We’d be honored to have you with us.
National Veterans Memorial & Museum
There’s only one Museum in America that honors ALL Veterans – from all branches of service, and from all eras of our nation’s proud history of military service, both peacetime and wartime. The National Veterans Memorial and Museum is a powerful and personal experience designed to give a voice to every man and woman who answered the call for our country.
This is neither a war memorial nor a military museum. The National Veterans Memorial and Museum takes visitors on a narrative journey telling individual stories and shared experiences of Veterans throughout history.
Central Ohio Fire Museum
The museum offers a captivating journey through the history of firefighting in Columbus, Ohio. Led by retired or active firefighters, these tours delve into the evolution of firefighting from hand-pulled carts and horse-drawn steam engines to modern-day services. Highlights include a permanent exhibit on African American firefighters and interactive experiences like ringing the 500 pound station bell and exploring early emergency communication methods.
Located in the historic Engine House #16, built in 1908 for horse-drawn steam engines, the Central Ohio Fire Museum showcases artifacts from central Ohio’s firefighting history since the early 19th century. Rotating exhibits feature the 100-year history of the Grandview Heights Division of Fire and the Columbus Industrial League baseball team of the 1920s-30s. The museum also offers fire safety education programs for all ages, ensuring an enriching experience for all guests.

On August 1, 1907, the US Army Signal Corps established a small Aeronautical Division to take “charge of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines, and all kindred subjects”, just 4 years after the Wright Brothers’ first flight.
Between 1909 and 1947, the U.S. Air Force did not exist as a separate and independent military service organization. It went through a series of designations: Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909); Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914); United States Army Air Service (1918); United States Army Air Corps (1926), and United States Army Air Forces (1941).
President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act on July 26, 1947, onboard the Presidential aircraft, a Douglas VC-54C named “Sacred Cow” which set the wheels in motion for the creation of a separate Air Force. The USAF became a separate service branch on Sept. 18, 1947, seven weeks later.

The Second Continental Congress established a Continental Navy, which later, on October 13, 1775, became the United States Navy. When the infant Navy was first formed, it consisted of just two armed vessels and their mission was to wage raids against the ships that supplied British forces in North America. After the war, the Continental Navy was dismantled, but pirate threats to American merchant shipping led President George Washington to establish the Naval Act of 1794, creating a permanent standing US Navy.
In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized official recognition of 13 October as the birthday of the U.S. Navy.
