Calling All Veterans
At Lorain County Veterans Service Commission, our mission is clear: to honor and support the brave women and men who have served in the United States military. Every day, we strive to find new ways to express our gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifices.
Back by popular demand is an all-expense-paid trip for veterans to the the McKinley Museum and Library followed by the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton.
We’d be honored to have you with us.
William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum
First, we head to the McKinley Library & Museum, where we begin our journey through history. We’ll take a comprehensive look at the life and legacy of our 25th President William McKinley’s role in shaping American history, and the era in which he lived. From his early years to his time in office and beyond.
Situated near the McKinley National Memorial, the museum offers visitors a deep dive into President McKinley’s personal and political journey, featuring the largest known collection of McKinley-related artifacts. Through engaging exhibits, guests can learn about his early years, military service, presidency, and tragic assassination.
MAPS Air Museum
Our second stop is always a highlight: the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton, Ohio. Here, our veterans are treated to a private guided tour of the facility, where they can marvel at historic aircraft and learn about the bravery and ingenuity of those who served before them.
You can expect to see meticulously restored aircraft up close, including iconic models such as the B-26 Marauder, P-51 Mustang, and F-4 Phantom II. In addition to aircraft, the museum features exhibits on aviation technology, wartime memorabilia, and the stories of the brave men and women who served.
The sense of pride and reverence in the air is palpable as we explore together.
Come Join Us
In the end, this trip is about more than just a day out; it is about showing our veterans that their service is remembered, valued, and deeply appreciated.
This trip is open to all veterans but the number of seats are limited to 50!

U.S. Army Birthday, 1775

Location

- LCVSC Office
- 1230 N Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035
-
Across the street from Lorain County Community College.
The U.S. Army was founded on 14 June 1775, when the Second Continental Congress authorized enlistment of expert riflemen to serve under General George Washington to fight against Britain. The Army is the oldest military force in the United States and began before the U.S. formally existed.
The Army technically has more than one birthday, as different elements of the new branch came into existence on different days. U.S. Army infantry may have been born on 14 June, 1775, but according to the Army, it’s Adjutant General’s Corps was formed two days later alongside the Army Corps of Engineers, Finance, and Quartermasters Corps. The Air Defense Artillery Corps followed in November, as did the Field Artillery Corps. New additions continued on into the modern era, and can all be found on the Army’s official birthday list page.

Independence Day, 1776

Location

- LCVSC Office
- 1230 N Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035
-
Across the street from Lorain County Community College.
Independence Day celebrates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. It was a formal declaration to the King of Great Britain by the 13 British colonies in America that justified the independence of the United States, listing 27 grievances against King George III and by asserting certain natural and legal rights, including a right of revolution.
The Fourth of July would not be an official holiday until congress passed a law making Independence Day a federal unpaid holiday on June 28, 1870. It wouldn’t be until 1938 that the Fourth of July would be a paid federal holiday along with Christmas, New Year’s, Memorial Day, Washington’s Birthday, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving.
