Temporary hardship Financial Assistance (FA) may be available to Veterans, or their widow, that show a need and meet eligibility requirements per the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 5901 as well as all applicable internal policies.
Examples of a hardship may include loss of income due to termination, illness, or other circumstances, increased expenses such as a major car or home repair, and more.
The Veteran must have:
- Been discharged under honorable conditions
- Served on active duty for purposes other than training
- Must also be a resident of Lorain County for at least 90 days prior to application
Applications are accepted by appointment only.
Assistance may be given for:
- Rent
- Mortgage
- Property tax
- Utilities (water, sewer, garbage, electric, phone, internet, TV antenna but not cable, & gas)
- Car payment and repairs, based on policy. (Three quotes for repairs may be required)
- Insurances (life, home, medical, dental, vision, renters, auto, etc.)
- Food
- Personal items
- Back to School Program (dependents)

Consideration for financial assistance is based on the following criteria
- Household income (this includes all income of all adults in the home)
- Living expenses
- Medical, Dental, and Vision expenses
- The circumstance of each applicant

Download W-9 (Rev. March 2024) - Call (440) 284-4630 to schedule an appointment to have your documents reviewed for accuracy and compliance.
Once your packet is complete and reviewed by triage, it will be forwarded to an adjudicator. This process may take up to 30 days. During the course of adjudication, you may be required to provide more information. You will have 72 hours to provide the requested documentation without delaying the processing of your request.
Once an application has been approved, a request for funds is send to the Lorain County Auditor. The timeframe for the funds to be received back to our office is not within our control and you will be notified as soon as the funds are available for you to pick up.
You must sign your completed application prior to receiving the funds.
