Veterans Appreciation Day Trip – Dennison Railroad & Warther Museum

The Lorain County Veterans Service Commission is proud to host another Veterans Appreciation Trip, offering local veterans and their guests a memorable day of history, craftsmanship, and camaraderie. This month’s excursion takes us to two of Ohio’s most fascinating destinations: the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum and the Warther Museum & Gardens.

Dennison Railroad Depot Museum

Our first stop is the nationally recognized Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, a beautifully restored World War II canteen and National Historic Landmark. Known as “Dreamsville, USA,” this depot welcomed and served more than a million servicemembers traveling across the country during the war. You’ll have the opportunity to explore exhibits that bring the 1940s to life, hear stories of the volunteers who supported our troops, and learn how this small Ohio town played a vital role in America’s victory. From vintage railcars to wartime memorabilia, the museum offers a moving reminder of the home-front efforts that supported those in uniform.

Warther Museum & Gardens

After lunch, we’ll continue to the Warther Museum & Gardens in Dover, where you’ll discover the incredible legacy of Ernest “Mooney” Warther – often celebrated as the world’s master carver. Marvel at his intricate hand-carved steam engines and breathtaking woodwork, each piece a testament to skill and dedication. The museum also features a working knife shop, family artifacts, and stunning gardens designed to inspire and delight. Whether you’re fascinated by artistry, history, or engineering, the Warther Museum offers something for everyone.
